Contrary to what many people think, the words of the Emma Lazarus poem ("Give me your tired, your poor") are not on the tablet. The tablet inscription reads "July IV, MDCCLXXVI" -- the date of the Declaration of Independence of the United States. The Emma Lazarus poem is on a bronze plaque installed inside the statue in 1903.

The Tablet that the Statue of Liberty holds in her left arm reads the following: July IV, MDCCLXXVI. This is the date, in Roman Numerals, of the signing of the declaration of Independence.

It reads "July IV, MDCCLXXVI", the Roman numeral translation of July 4, 1776, the United States independence day. July 4, 2009 is also the day that the interior of the Statue is scheduled to reopen to visitors.
