Turf can refer to grass or a lawn, but most people use the term to mean a territory that they control. So, when someone says that "you are on my turf," they mean that you are encroaching on 'their' area.

I've always thought of turf as a section of land. In more recent years it implies personal territory (neighborhood). For example, I spotted my rival on my home turf.

Turf traditionally refers to the ground cover or grassy sod on the ground. Turf wars were literally fighting over sections of good, living, productive land. The term turf has expanded to include any artificial material that resembles grass or green plant cover, such as astro-turf simulating grass. Artificial turf can be made of nylon or polyethylene.
