Vygotsky's Theory states that consciousness is the result of socialization. He argues that a lot of activities that we take for granted are not innate, but are learned through our interactions with others. For example, learning to use a pencil is the result of society's training. But further internalization occurs when a child can produce his/her own style with it.

One part of Vygotsky's theory is the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) that says there are things a person can do easily and there are things a person can't do at all. Between those two is the ZPD where a person can do a task with help. This is where learning takes place. Teachers scaffold students to help them learn.

The theory is that there are things that a person can do quite easily and there are things that are impossible for someone to do. Between these is a place known as ZPD where you should be able to do unfamiliar tasks with the help of a teacher. This is used to explain teh learning process.
