Ronald DeFeo killed his family members and claims he did it due to a paranormal presence within the house. While many are skeptics, parts of the story remain a mystery.

No one truly knows. However there is speculation that it was all an insurance scam as DeFeo was having problems with his construction company and the bank was ready to foreclose on his business and the big house he just purchased for his family. During this 'supposed' haunting he wrote a check to a wedding caterer that bounced.
