Depending on the severity, treatment can often be taken care of at home by avoiding strain, taking asprin,ibuprofen, naproxen, celebrex or vioxx. Applying ice or having the affected area massaged are other do it yourself treatments. Surgery may be considered in extreme cases. After surgery, a cervical collar may need to be worn for up to 12 weeks.

Surgery helped me. A neurosurgeon can remove the herniated disk, put in a bone graft and titanium plate to fuse the vertabrae. Discomfort only lasted a couple of weeks, full recovery after 6 mos & 12 wks of PT. Been pain free ever since.
