Broken sternum may be treated with pain killers and an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen. This condition is not treated with a cast, the best course for treatment is rest.

THe heart should be evaluated by electrocardiogram to see if there's been any damage. If not, surgery is not usually required unless bone fragments are causing intense pain.

Your physician will instruct you to take ibuprofen for any inflammation and a mild pain reliever, such as Darvocet. Rest the area and limit your movements. Your doctor may also recommend physical therapy. After a few weeks of rest you should try to go back to your daily activities.
