What is the structure of a lysosome and how does it relate to its function?

Lysosomes have a protective membrane that allows the rest of the cell-body to be protected from the harsh metabolic enzymes that Lysomes produce when breaking down the cell's unwanted materials. This protective shield allows lysosomes to maintain the acidic environment needed to break down these materials, much like the stomach does for the body.

A lysosome is a cellular structure made up of a variety of enzymes, strictly found in animal cells. The function of a lysosome is to break down and digest waste material, food particles, viruses and bacteria, and other cellular debris.
