Lysosomes have a protective membrane that allows the rest of the cell-body to be protected from the harsh metabolic enzymes that Lysomes produce when breaking down the cell's unwanted materials. This protective shield allows lysosomes to maintain the acidic environment needed to break down these materials, much like the stomach does for the body.
