It is believed the souls of men and women who lost their lives coming home to their families linger on the grounds of Twentynine Palms in California. They say late at night you can hear combat boots walking on the floors or on the stone work. Whether this story is true or not remains to be seen.

I would guess it's the same as most "hauntings". Something bad happens at a location,time goes by,somebody thinks they hear or see something they can't explain so it HAS to be ghosts,spirits or something supernatural. There is no scientific evidence that such a thing as "haunting" occurs. In fact, science has show again and again that this is NOT true.
