Thomas Crawford designed the Statue of Freedom that crowns the Capitol. It is more than 19 feet tall. It holds the sheathed sword of peace in one hand, and in the other the laurel wreath of victory and the United States shield. The odd headgear is a compromise. The Liberty Cap, emblem of a freed slave, was rejected.

It is called the Statue of Freedom. It is made of bronze and was designed by Thomas Crawford. She was placed atop the U.S. Capitol on a cast-iron pedestal in 1863. In 1993, she required restoration due to pitting and corrosion. The restoration was completed over a 4 month period.
