The LHC is funded by tax money and government grants through a variety of sources. Many countries have a stake in its functioning, so they cooperate to fund it through government and private funds. There is no single primary source of funding, except perhaps taxes.

The largest single funder is CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which contributed about 20% of the total costs. Several national governments provided funding, including a large contribution from the United States (about 500 million USD, or 5% of the total cost). Money was also contributed by a large consortium of universities worldwide.
