What is the purpose of embroidery hoops?

Can't you sew without them?

Embroidery hoops are used mostly for stretching the fabric out so it doesn't bunch up and catch. They also provide a nice, flat surface that you can hold as you work, and can be used as frames for hanging finished work as well.

Embroidery hoops enable a person to detail stitch more freely with the hands. They also improve visibility and accuracy. Sometimes it is next to impossible to stitch projects without them. The hoops come in a variety of sizes for the many projects that crafters do. There are also wooden, metal, and plastic embroidery hoops available.

A hoop keep the top, bottom and inter layer flat and contained. Sewing wihtout invites teh fabric to be uneven and hard to keep a pattern.
