A bar graph is used to show and compare quantitative data of one type in a visual form. For example, a bar graph may show the monthly sales of a company. A double bar graph is used to show and compare data of two types on one graph. For example, it may show the monthly sales of two different companies.

Double bar graphs are used to track two quantities. For example, if you want to chart the monthly sales of two types of shoes, you could use a double bar graph - two bars for each month. One bar represents shoe A and the other bar represents shoe B.

A double bar graph allows people to plot two series together side by side. When viewing the graph, focusing on one bar shows the progression of that series. Comparing the two bars allows the two series to be compared at each point. Using contrasting colours for bars is a good idea.

A double bar graph is used when you have two relevant sets of data in comparison to each other, such as showing the number of customers along with sales for each month, or showing gross sales and net profits side-by-side.
