The PS1 has a 128 KB memory card in a EEPROM format. EEPROM stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory and basically means that it can store small amounts of data that is saved when power is removed. EEPROM's have a finite life, the number of times that they can be reprogrammed is limited.

PS1 has a specail memory format for its memory card, to format the memory card you must plug it into your system and the system will automatically format it

The ps1 cards are like the ones you see at the ps2. That is why most ps1 cards are compatible with ps2 consoles.
