What is the proper way to meditate? How long does it take to learn?

My friend said it's a great relaxation tool.

Everyone is different, as some people get the knack of it right away and some people find it hard to calm their mind. There are also many different kinds of meditation. The one I'm most familiar with is to sit or lay on the floor in a comfortable position. With eyes closed, focus on the darkness and think of nothing.

It depends on what kind of meditation. There is Zen meditation, Transcendental Meditation and other methods. You can start meditating with a couple hours of instruction using a simple method.

Sitting upright with the spine erect is the proper way to meditate. When learning to meditate, there is no right or wrong way, as long as you achieve the desired results. If you have found the method of relaxation and reflection that works for you, you have learned to meditate.

The easiest way to start is to sit quietly in a chair with your back straight and close your eyes. Notice your breathing. Try to concentrate on your breath. Thoughts will come and go but after a few sessions of 15 minutes, you should start to feel more comfortable.
