Choose the size of the hole for the birdhouse depending on the kind of birds you want to attract. a 1.25" hole is great for chickadees and wrens; larger birds can't enter. A 2" hole works for swallows and woodpeckers. The larger the hole, the more easily predators can enter.

It depends on the size of the birds you want to live in the house. For smaller birds, a 3/4" to 1" hole would be sufficient. Larger birds would require larger holes, and you should make the hole proportionate to the amount of space inside of the bird house.
