Sympathy can be expressed in person, on a card, or by sending a basket of fruit or flowers. Saying, "I am so sorry for your loss. " covers it all.

If this is a close member of your family then handwritten thank you cards are always the most proper way of thanking someone.

It is always proper to acknowledge expressions of sympathy with written notes. If the reason is a death in the family, often the funeral home will provide cards for you to use to acknowledge the expression of sympathy. If you are close to the person who expressed sympathy, a phone call or email is okay, too.
