Heart disease does affect older animals and is more detrimental to older animals unfortunately. Your cat can live a long life with a proper diet and care including medications.

You would need to talk to your vet about the prognosis for your individual cat. A lot of factors will go into determining her prognosis, including the level of her heart disease, her general health, etc. Her prognosis will also greatly depend on the level of care you provide to her.

There are many forms of heart disease in cats, but Maine Coon cats are particularly at risk for congestive heart failure. Heart failure is classified in 4 stages. Treatment in Stages C and D is very much like that for humans with heart disease. With diuretics, beta blockers and ace inhibitors the prognosis is good.

Depending on the type of heart disease a cat may live a full life with heart disease. It will require lifelong veterinary care. It all depends on exactly what is wrong with the cat's heart, some disease is very treatable, while sadly, others are fatal. Your veterinarian should be able to advise you on the best course of treatment for your cat.

To know that you would need to have testing done to see how advanced the condition is. Also the addition of a perscription diet and life style change will also aid in her treatment. You should consult your vet for more information.

Two years old is fairly young for a cat, so as long as your cat gets regular vet care he could live a long and happy life.
