Reboot, and/or as the system is going through initial startup, press F8 on the keyboard repeatedly. That should give you a menu of Windows startup options, one of which will be "Safe Mode". Use the arrow keys to select that option and press "Enter".

To get into safe mode, reboot the computer and repeatedly strike the F8 key as the computer boots. From the Boot list that appears, select the boot into safe mode option.

When you first turn on the thinkpad there should be a message across the bottom that says "Press F(some number) to get into set up" probably F8. Press that button that will put you into the bios. From there you can find the option "boot in safe mode".

This depends on the operating system installed on the ThinkPad. But, in general terms, press the F8 key after the IBM startup screen and continue to press it until an advanced startup screen appears. Once the screen appears, choose safe mode from the list.
