The word "wow" first appeared in writing in 1513. It is an onomatopoeia (a word for a sound) for the sound one makes when surprised or in awe.

Someone once told me that "WOW" had a very old origin, attributed to the Goddess, maybe an expression of amazement. Much like "ow" came from the old Germanic word "au", originally meant "light", so that when hurt, you'd place a hand on the wound, say "au" & heal with light.  add a comment

"Wow" is widely credited with Scottish origin, appearing in the early 1500s and thought to be a natural expression of amazement.
