This procedure can check for colon cancer in a patient. If there are non-cancerous polyps, these can be removed. The growths are sent for tests to see if they are benign or cancerous. If this type of cancer is detected early, the chances of successful treatment is increased.

Colonoscopy is a screening exam for the detection of colorectal cancer. The benefit is that if one can detect these cancers at an earlier stage, the chances of a curative treatment increase.
