Before every dvd starts it tells what happens. You will be prosecuted and fined heavily if copyrighted work is copied illegally. They take these cases seriously,

Pop in a DVD and read the notice that appears on the screen. It is against the law to reproduce a copyrighted DVD to sell or to show to a paying audience. If you own a DVD, you can copy it for yourself for a back-up, for example.

The only time you are allowed to legally make a copy is when an indvidual does so for the purpose of a personal back up copy, all other are illegal!

Violations of the copyrights laws of the United States can result in civil penalties of up to $150,000 per willful infringement, and substantial criminal penalties as well. However, the criminal penalties generally only apply if the person was infringing the copyright for profit.

It is illegal and if you are caught you could be looking at a major fine and or jail time and possible lawsuits from whoever owns the rights to the movie.
