The highest MPG that I have ever seen is the Geo Metro XFI, at 53 MPG in the city and 58 MPG on the highway. Supposedly the Toyota Echo Spirit got 104 MPG, but it has never been proven.

That's a fairly loaded question. A solar powered car or a battery alternated car can get upwards to 100 MPG, a standard car can get maybe 50 at best.

the highest mpg a car can get is very high. ive seen numbers in the 70's like the little smart cars

Well I guess the only maximum would be if someone made a 100% efficient engine. But that is not really possible with available technology.

Well it depends on what kind of car you are referring to. A normal non-hybrid car typically can get better than 30 or 40 mpg's. Hybrids however can get closer to 50. This could increase as technology improves.
