Since there is 1000 grams in a kilogram, the grams to kilograms conversion consists of dividing the amount of grams you have by 1000. For example, if you want to know how many kilograms are in 5000 grams, divide 5000 by 1000 giving you 5 kilograms. Another way would be to multiply the amount of grams by 0.001.

One kilogram is the same as 1,000 grams. Move the decimal point 3 to the left for kg to g (1.0kg=1000.0g); 3 to the right for g to kg (1.0g=0.001kg).

One kilogram = 1,000 (one thousand) grams. The prefix "kilo" is from the Greek χίλιοι ("chilioi") and means a thousand. (i.e. 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters, etc.)
