A Black swallowtail is not a bird, it is a butterfly. If you mean general swallows, incubation plus nesting runs from about 30 to 45 days.

The gestation period for a black swallowtail,it takes 3-5 days for egg to hatch and the caterpillar has five instars,the chrysalis stage lasts 9-11days,over winter

I have a lovage plant full of Swallowtail caterpillars....how long until they enter the chrysalis stage? They have eaten a 7ft Lovage plant down to almost nothing.
