What is the difference between misdemeanors and felonies?

A felony is a very serious crime that has very serious repercussions. Examples being murder, grand theft, etc. A misdemeanor is a crime that is not as serious and you can either pay a fine or spend some time in jail. Getting a felony will make it harder for you to find work. Misdemeanors are not as frowned upon.

The main difference is the severity of the crime. Felonies are considered to be more serious crimes than misdemeanors. Felonies are also often prosecuted Federally. The sentence and punishment for felonies is also greater.

Think of criminal charges as having higher and lower catagories. The lowest catagory is the misdemeanors and the highest is the felony. Within these 2 catagores are sub catagories. With a felony, certain rights are taken away from you as a citizen. As for the misdemeanor, no rights are taken away.
