What is the difference between celery and celeriac?

I have a recipe that calls for celeriac, but I'm wondering if I can just use celery.

Celery can be a term used for both "celery" and "celeriac. ". Celery is actually the stalks of the plant the and celeriac is the root of the plant

Celeriac is the root of the celery and has a much more mellow flavor. You could replace it with celery, but you would get a very different taste.

Celeriac is also called celery root, and has a texture like potatoes or other root vegetable's. So if the recipe is just using it for flavor, celery will work fine. But if the texture is what the recipe is calling for then using celery as a substitute may not give you the desired results.
