Baking powder is a leavening agent that causes batters to rise. Baking soda only works in combination with particular ingredients that are acidic in nature.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is one of the ingredients in baking powder. It also contains acid salt, such as cream of tartar, and corn starch.

Baking powder contains baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in it. Baking powder can be substituted for baking soda in recipes but you'll need to use more baking powder and taste may be affected. You shouldn't substitute baking soda for baking powder because baking soda lacks the acidity to make cakes rise.

Baking soda is used to make cookies and cake rise, while baking powder dries up baking stuff. If you use baking powder to make dough cook it right away.
