A trial is to make a decision of your quilt to a crime. A grand jury is presented potential charges and the grand jury hands down an indictment.

A grand jury makes an initial determination to decide if sufficient evidence exists inorder to require the accused to go to trial. The Prosecutor controls the process and no Judge or defense attorney present. A jury trial is 12 individuals who then serve as jurors and the case is tried in the presence of the defendant and their attorney.
