It needs to be lanced and drained of pus, then a course of antibiotics/ibuprofen must be taken. Serious cases can lead to Root Canal treatment, where they remove the tooth's crown, remove the root completely and fill the root space with an innate setting liquid then the tooth is crowned.

The infected area should be drained to remove swelling and bacteria. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day. Take prescribed antibiotics as directed by doctor.Go in for x-rays in 6 months.

The procedure, while not pretty and sometimes uncomfortable, is absolutely vital for overall health. Treatment involves two steps -- immediate intervention and long-term prevention of infection. Immediate removal requires draining the pus and elimination of the diseased and dead tissue in the abscess. Long-term prevention requires an antibiotic regime and salt-water rinses.
