The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination due to race, gender, and religion in public places. It also outlawed racial segregation in public schools. Its purpose was to end racial discrimination and employment practices that were widespread at the time. The legislation was first proposed by President John F. Kennedy and passed into law on July 12,1964.
