I would purchase a basic "trouble-shooting" kit. This includes a temperature gauge, a set of sockets, and allen wrenches designed for Hvac units. Your AC manual has a bi-unit schematic.

I would first shop around for the best price you can find from a professional installer. If you can't find a professional in your price range find an experienced friend

The cheapest way is to install an outdoor package unit and run a return and supply duct into 2 single registers. The problem is it will be so terribly inefficient that the cost of electric will outweigh the correct installation in a matter of a few years.

The cheapest way to do this is to buy the unit itself, all the parts to install it, including the vents and duct, and install it all yourself. This way you're not paying labor costs, only part costs. You have to know what you're doing though.
