What is the best way to refinish stained plywood flooring?

I am not crazy about the current color of my flooring and would like to re-stain it.

You can lightly sand this but you have to be careful not to go deeper than the first layer. Mainly you only want to remove most of finish from the surface and then re-apply another finish.

The best way to re-stain it is by painting it. You can get a whole selection of paints from your local Home Depot.

Try removing the old varnish with solvents. Then use sander to get all the old stuff off the floor. Then clean the floor carefully, so that there's no dust left, and apply new stain.

You will need to use a paint stripper to get the varnish or polyurethane completely removed from the floor, then sand down the floor using first a coarse grid and then a smoother grid. The sanding should finish removing the old stain. Then apply new stain to floor. You may need to apply the stain twice.

If the floor is light then you can take a corner add the darker stain and play with the color. If it is dark and you want to go light that is a little harder. You might have to bleach out the stain.

To go darker strip any sealer off the floor and then stain and re-seal it. If you want a lighter one you just need to bleach the surface first.
