Mildew is a bacteria that occurs and spreads when various types of porous materials such as fabrics, or hard surfaces have retained moisture. To prevent mildew, never leave damp fabric confined in a container or leave furniture wet. Maintain dry surfaces on all other porous areas such countertops or corners where caulk was used.

Always make sure all clothing, towels, dish clothes or anything else that is damp or wet has been allowed to dry before placing in the hamper. Anything that is damp or wet will promote the growth of mildew in your home.

You need to wash them sooner cause wet clothes laying together will mildew and smell. Hang wet towels on a hook or rack so they dry somewhat before letting them sit wet together in a pile then wash the dirty towels.

Mildew occurs because of constant moisture. Assuming you are refering to clothes in a hamper or basket waiting to be washed, here's what you need to do. First, clean the hamper/basket thoroughly. Then take 2 tblsp bleach, 1 cup water and wipe. Completely dry and keep dry. Don't put anything wet in hamper.

Wet clothes if stored compactly together for more than a day usually start forming or getting mildew. To prevent mildew, I suggest washing wet clothes immediately.

Do not pile up wet or damp clothing or towels, this is the surest way to get mildew. Only throw completely dry things into your hamper, leave the items somewhere to dry first. You can spray the hamper with vinegar, this will kill the mildew and stop further mildew if you continue to only add dry items to the hamper.

Do not put towels or clothing into the laundry bin until they are fully dry. If they end up with mildew or a mildew smell, simply wash on it with detergent and use fabric softener to expunge the unpleasant scent.
