It's best not to over-water tomato plants, as this can kill them. If your tomatoes start to look like they are drying out in the morning, water them. If they look the same in the afternoon, they don't necessarily need water. Check the soil; it should feel dry, not dusty.

Indirect watering is best if it is not raining regularly. Use either a lawn sprinkler system or a root watering hose laid on the ground to moisturize the roots and not the leaves. Let the soil dry almost completely between watering.

Tomatoes are very sensitive to soil warming levels so it is important to never chill the ground with overly cold water, which can fool the plant into thinking that it is in spring again, be sure to use warm water and water deeply.

It is best to water at the base - where the plant and soil meet -because watering the leaves can possibly lead to mildew. Water at least an inch deep and keep it moist at that level. Stick in your finger to see if the water goes down that far.

Its important to water your tomatoes at the base of the plants and not spray them from the top. If you spray them from the top they can develop a fungus.
