What is the best way to cancel plans at the last minute?

This should be done only in rare situations when something comes up that cannot be avoided. You should attempt to call those impacted directly and immediately. Apologize and state the reason as honestly as possible. If possible, state your intention to attempt to make up for the last minute cancellation at a future time.

Be as honest and sincere as you can about your conflict, cancel as quickly as possible, be considerate of the other person's feelings, and don't apologize more than once.

Make a phone call instead of e-mailing or sending a text message, it's more personal. If possible, explain the reason for cancelling. Apologize and offer to reschedule at a later date.
