The first thing to do is have an X-ray to determine the cause of the knot. Make sure you do not have a ruptured ligament. This could also be caused from a sprain. The best thing to do until you know the cause is to put your knee in a knee immobilizer, use crutches, apply ice, and elevate the injured leg.

This is more than likely a cyst and needs to be evaluated by a doctor. It is a fluid filled mass and cancer does need to be ruled out. It could also be caused by a trauma.

The best treatment for a soft knot is usually to keep ice on it. The ice reduces swelling and can also assist in soothing your pain. Another good thing to do would most likely be to soak it in warm water. This will also reduce the swelling and help soothe your pain.
