Usually, the best time to prune live oaks is late winter to early spring. Choosing to prune during late February or early March is the best time to trim. During this time, the trees are losing and regaining new leaves. Major pruning during the winter months can shock the tree and cause it to lose it's leaves.

The best time to prune live oak trees is late winter. You can also plant it in early spring before the trees leaf out. Because they must have been kept cool in a specific time. Pruning oaks during this period may attract sap beetles carrying the oak wilt fungus to the pruning cuts and transmit the disease to healthy trees.
