pressure treated timber can actually be stained using deck stain and you will never know it was treated until thirty years down the road when the wood is still beautiful. other options for more ornate ones can be teak, oak, or rosewood but theyre a waste of money for something outdoors, stick with pine.

With out a doubt oak, with its bark removed and dressed with carbolineum, is the best material to use for a building a pergola. We have tried other kinds of wood but they just don't hold up. It doesn't need to be so extravagant, unless money is not a concern. Because the oak will cost you some bucks.
