There are different kinds of cutting edge video cards. There are video cards for gaming, for workstations, for video rendering, etc, and they are all different. Right now nVidia and AMD have their own line of top-of-the-line including the HD5870 and the GTX280.

As far as companies that make them Nvidia is the best atleast in my opinion as for the best card they have out now its the 480 GTX it has 1.5gb v-ram

It all depends on your preferred brand because there are a lot of competitive parts out there. I personally prefer Nvidia. I find them to be fast and reliable when it comes to video graphics capabilities.

That depends on how you are planning to use it. If you need it for gaming and money isn't a problem, then best option, I think, would be nvidia geforce gtx 460. If lowest price is the goal, then you may get along with built in video.
