What is the believes by Italians to do with horseshoes, doors and luck?

Many people, not just Italians, believe hanging a horseshoe over your doorway (upward like a "U") is good luck. This belief is held especially by Italians, who frequently carry horseshoes as good luck charms.

Horseshoes symbolize good luck and act as a ward against evil. The shoe must be found and not bought, it is usually mounted by the side of the door so anyone in need luck or protection can touch it. Mounted ends up is so the luck wont run out, ends down is to pour the luck upon all who pass.

Hello, not only in Italy many people in Europe believe that a lost horseshoe ( you must find it - don't buy one) brings you luck, when you nail it at a door or to a wall. Important is, that the opening is on top. So the luck will be gathered in the horseshoe, and can't fall out.
