The 12th amendment outlines the procedure in which the president and vice president are elected. It's still relevant today because we follow the procedures that were outlined in 1803 and ratified in 1804. Delaware, Massachusetts, and Connecticut rejected the amendment, but it only needed 3/4ths to pass the amendment, so that wasn't a problem.

Originally, electoral college members cast two votes; the top vote-getter was President, the runner-up was Vice President. Under Amendment XII, electors cast separate votes for President and VP.
