rs232 is the communications port found on computers. It's a 9 pin port with a D-sub connector. It transmits and receives data serially (over one line) in an asynchronous receiver/transmitter. This means it doesn't send the data referenced to a clock signal. It is slower than USB by a lot.

It is a standard used to communicate between a device, like a joystick, and a computer. A lot of devices connecting to a computer are using this standard. The type of connectors commonly used with rs232 are db-9 and db-25, which means that they have 9 pins or 25 pins. Each pin has it's own purpose.

RS-232 is a point-to-point serial transmission communications interface, which uses electrical ground as the reference. RS-232 was mainly used for connecting the computer to external peripherals such as a mouse or a modem. Today, RS-232 has been displaced by the USB standard for interconnecting peripheral devices to the PC.
