What is preferred in a Grandma necklace: birthstones or engraved disks with the kids' names?

My grandmother loved her mother's ring that had the birthstones of all of her kids in it. It was the only jewelry she was buried with.

Although it's a close tie, usually engraved disks with the kids' names are preferred. A benifit to the disks is not worrying about the stones loosening or falling out.
