To control a race horse a stud chain is most commonly used under the upper lip along the gum line. If they don't kick excessively you could try hobbles on the front legs, or put them in a squeeze chute for cattle.

Track horses need time out, feed changes (less high concentrate grains to more hay,) and handling as if they have never been handled before does the job.

First, allow the horse time to "de-tox" from the track. Keep your handling sessions short- quit for the day when he does small things correctly. Turn out to pasture is crucial. Begin with simple ground work, and work towards saddling. Treat horse much like he has never been ridden before.

If you've never trained a horse before send this horse to a professional. Former racehorses often times have psychological issues and most people don't get how hard it is. You need to start from ground work up. Remember, these horses galloped left in a circle their whole lives!

It's not something a novice should attempt. Racehorses often have tempers and/or behavioral problems. These horses were trained to gallop and turn left. So you will need to teach the horse to walk, calm down a bit and turn both ways.

First step in retraining a race horse would be to get horse to trust you. After you accomplish that then you would need to work with the horse on the ground by lunging and working with him to learn to go to the right. Race horse dont know how to go the right. Then you will be able to ride.

The keep the horse calm so he will not be injured or injure others. Talk in a calm voice and give him encouragement and keep a tight reign on him. You may have to get off him and talk to him and walk him to calm him down so he will not be hurt.
