Imperialism is a policy or idealogy of having a government set up an empire. In modern usage it is meant to suggest that a country wishes to expand it's territorial control beyond its traditional borders. US military bases in the pacific and Europe can be a example of this.

Imperialism is extending control or authority over foreign entities as a means of acquisition and/or maintenance of empires, either through direct territorial conquest or through indirect methods of exerting control on the politics and/or economy of other countries. The term is often used to describe the policy of a country in maintaining colonies and dominance over distant lands.
