Glucosamine is commonly used for joint problems such as arthritis. It is often combined with chondroitin and is available over the counter in many stores. I have also seen it available for use with pets.

Glucosamine is usually recommended for joint pain. It is usually derived from some part of seafood, so people with allergies should beware. I'm a vegetarian, so I use an MSM/Chondroitin supplement instead. My dad (who has had shoulder problems forever) uses glucosamine and says it works well, as does my mother-in-law, who has wrist pain like mine.

Glucosamine has been heavily advertised as a way to reduce joint pain. You are supposed to take it for several weeks before any benefit is felt. There is some belief that the relief is the result of the placebo effect.
