What is dye diffusion thermal transfer printing?

Is this a computer thing? Or like art dye?

It is a printing process. Durable ink is applied to paper or heavy stock to create densely colored images from a three-colored ribbon (primary colors) and usually black, as well. Bar codes and UPC codes are usually applied via this process.

Dye diffusion is a printing method involving a computer driven print mechanism which heats dye in a ribbon causing it to sublimate, the receiving media receives the sublimated dye into its surface, it is more likely used for signs and plastic devices like ID cards than for artwork.
