Experts can put together a fairly good "picture" of a criminal based on evidence at the crime scene, especially with regard to homicides. Serial criminals are often profiled, based on their behavior committing the crimes, and investigators use this information to narrow the search for the offender. The FBI and larger law enforcement groups have criminal profilers on staff.

This is where law enforcement personnel develops a profile of the person or persons who have committed a crime by analyzing the scene, method used, similarities with other crime scenes.
