Question by  Nora (20)

What is considered good walking etiquette for trail walking?

I've never been trail walking or hiking before, and I would like some tips as to what is proper. Who walks ahead? What if someone wants to pass me?

In the United States, stay to the right. If someone comes up behind you (because they're walking faster), find a place to step out of the way. If you encounter people with dogs, ask before you interact with the animal. If you bring a dog, bring more than one bag with you to pick up after it.

Tips on trail courtesy: acknowledge fellow hikers, pause to allow people to pass, be conscious of the noise you're making, be ready to assist and share if needed.
