The prefix "oligo" means "a few" to form terms like "oligodendroglioma" and "oligo-astrocytomas. " The nature of your friend's tumor was likely discussed with him at length. There are lots of different types of brain tumors, malignant and benign, that can affect various parts of the brain. Perhaps when your friend is feeling up to it, he could explain.

An oligo, or oligodendroglioma, tumor is a slow-growing tumor in the brain most common in young adults. The tumors contain calcium, or bits of bone, and bleed easily. They often cause seizures. Surgery to remove it is the current treatment, and chemotherapy options are currently being investigated in trial studies.

This is a brain tumor that is of unknown cause although it may be due to a virus. Between 50% to 80% of patients are diagnosed due to onset of seizures but it can cause symptoms such as motor weakness, cognitive decline, or visual loss.

The "Oligo" part of the name refers to the type of cell that is cancerous - Oligodendrocytes. These aren't neurons, but are a type of glial cell. Outcomes and symptoms for this type of tumor will vary widely based on the severity of the disease and location of the tumor.
